Construction can be a stressful time for your pets. There are new smells, people coming in and out, and of course a lot of noise. Its important for you to have a plan set in place for your pets. Your contractor should give you a timeline not only of days they are working but of tentative times they will actually be there. You will want to use this timeline to plan accordingly but don’t forget to have things ready just in case if your contractor arrives early and leaves late. Follow these 5 steps to insure a good plan.

  1. Create A Safe Space

Choose a quiet space as far away from the noise and mess as possible. As your renovation begins things will be unfamiliar for your pets and could create a lot of stress for them. Make sure wherever this space might be that you fill it with familiar things like their blanket, toys, bed, and treats. Make sure there is plenty of food and fresh water for them.

  2. Create Distractions

Don’t just lock up your pets, keep them distracted. Play some loud music, leave the TV on, show them a new trick whatever to keep them distracted. Make sure to have plenty of play/exercise time to let out that stress.

  3. Keep Your Pets Away From The Construction Site

There can be many toxic and dangerous items around a construction zone. Make sure to keep them far away, you don’t want your pet being sick or hurt because there wasn’t a plan in place.

  4. Watch For Stress

Keep a close eye on your pet. Look for behavior changes like aggression, bathroom issue, loss of appetite, etc… If you notice nothing is working talk to your veterinarian. Maybe they can inform you on medications or anxiety wraps.

  5. Tell Your Contractors Your Plans

There is nothing worse than showing up to a job site and accidentally let out the dog and you have to chase it down the block. This has literally happened to use multiple times. It’s so important that your contractor know if there are pets, where they will be, and the plan of action if they should escape. Don’t just brush it off, this is such an important step to keep everyone and your pet safe.
