Renovating can be such an excited time but don’t fall for the common myths that can end up hurting yourself or your wallet in the long run.

Myth #1: A Permit Is Not Needed When Renovating

Many remodeling projects require a permit. Hopefully, you have chosen a great general contractor like Utah Construction Specialists that will get the permits for you. If you don’t have a great contractor or you are doing it by yourself, call your local building or codes department. Remember by neglecting to get the permits needed, it can cost you. The state can force you to stop the remodel, force you to redo some/all of the work and can tag along fines.

What remodeling requires a permit? Minor or cosmetic projects like painting or installing new flooring usually don’t require a permit. Large projects like plumbing, electrical, removing walls or creating new windows will probably require permits.

Myth #2: Interior Renovations Do Not Need the Approval of the HOA

In this case, it’s better to ask for permission instead of forgiveness. Most HOA’s wont mind but you should check. There could be rules or guidelines for you or the construction company.

Myth #3: Remodels always cost more than bid

Bids should cover everything but keep in mind once you start removing/moving things around, unexpected events can happen. It’s not common but it can happen. Your contractor should always be honest with you and will tell you if they find something and what they plan on doing about it.

Myth #4: You can do it yourself

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. You can of course do ALOT of things but please leave the major projects for the professionals. Things like electrical, removing walls and roofing should always be left to the professionals. This big items can cause huge safety issues and if done wrong, you wallet will feel it.

Do everything you can but know your limits and leave the big projects to the professionals.

Myth #5 Your Contractor is Going to Take the Money and Walk Off The Job

We are all aware of the rumors and a lot of us know someone that was taken advantage of but know that there are many honest and good contractors out there. We recommend you always get several bids and always check to make sure the contractors are licensed and insured.
