Planning for a home renovation is an exciting time but it also can be stressful if you don’t know what to expect. If you haven’t chosen a contractor yet, sign up to get our Free guide to choosing a contractor. Once you and your contractor have chosen a start date, it’s time for you to prepare.
Decide if you will stay in the home or move out for the remodel.
If you are just doing one room or remodeling, it’s ok to stay at home. If you have chosen to do the entire home it might be safer for you to move out for the time being.
Take 2-3 days to pack up your entire remodeling space.
You don’t want to slow down the remodeling process because your contractor needs to wait to have everything cleared out. Get everything out. Give the contractors plenty of space to do their work. If you cant move certain furniture, cover the furniture with plastic or moving blankets.
If remodeling your kitchen, decide where and what you will eat during the time.
You don’t want to plan to use the stove when it’s not available and you don’t want to spend a big chunk on your money eating out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Have a Plan for Your Children and Animals.
Construction sites can be dangerous, there is exposed wire, nails, dust. Especially if you have demolition going on, there can be many harmful pollutants. Construction also comes with very loud noises that can prevent your children from their daily nap or terrify your pets.
Prepare Yourself. Your life will be disrupted.
There will be noise, dust, limited privacy on top of your normal life chaos. But hold on, the end result will all be worth it.
